Why choose dental implants over bridges or dentures?
Dental implants are a newer technology that offers several key benefits over dental bridges, dentures, and other restorations. They’re a popular way to replace missing teeth because they provide a strong, secure anchor for replacement teeth while retaining the look, feel, and function of natural teeth.
- Improve the appearance of missing teeth for a full, even smile
- Look as natural as your own teeth with customized shaping and coloring
- Feel and function comfortably like your real teeth, with less maintenance than dentures
- Eliminate the need to sacrifice healthy adjacent teeth to provide support for bridgework
How does a dental implant work?
An implant-restored tooth consists of three main parts. First, the implant itself is made of titanium and anchored firmly to the upper or lower jawbone. Next, the abutment connects the implant to the crown (the visible portion of the tooth) and attaches with a screw. Abutments may be made of titanium, gold, or porcelain. Finally, the restoration (the part that looks like a tooth) is a crown usually made of porcelain fused to metal (PFM) or sometimes all metal or all porcelain. The crown is cemented or screwed onto the abutment for a secure hold while eating or talking. To finish the look for a natural appearance, the screw hole is also covered with restorative material such as tooth-colored filling material (composite).
When dental implants are a suitable treatment
Overall, the process can be completed in just a few visits to our office to place the implant, allow for healing, and add a custom-molded restoration that feels comfortable to you. Dental implants are an excellent solution to a single-tooth replacement, and they can also give patients with existing dentures the extra support they need. Implants are ideal for improving the stability and retention of dentures, so if you’re frustrated or disappointed with a denture that slips, get back confidence to eat and speak normally by calling our office about dental implants.
